$$ THM Ingredients

During my first few weeks of THM, purchasing new ingredients was one of my HUGE battle grounds. I knew in general what ingredients I needed to buy, but I didn’t know what brands to buy (or best prices). So after scouring many different stores (online and locally in Bham, AL), I’ve come to the happy conclusion that for the most part, I’ve conquered ingredients (BIG thanks to all the THM ladies too who helped answer many questions about brands!!). Now I get to share all my finds with you!

The document was created in hopes that the beginning stages of THM life will be a little less complicated for you and hopefully this will help you save in the long run! Save both time and money. I know that all stores in various locations will carry different stock and prices may vary some as well, but at least you can get an idea of what ingredients/brands/prices to shoot for when you are out shopping.

The items you will see in the document consist of 99% of what I use on a daily/weekly basis. For the most part, I’ve organized the document by stores/where to buy. The reason for this is because a lot of these items come from online stores such as Vitacost, Swansonvitamins and Amazon and most of the time these online stores offer free shipping when you purchase a certain amount!

I will be frequently updating the document so keep checking back for new prices, brands and info! Please feel free to leave a comment or contact me if you know of a better deal on any of the brands (or know of a new brand!)!

At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all, I decided to comment. On your list of prices and ingredients, you list Now brand xylitol. This brand is derived from corn, not birch, and I was told it is not on plan or maybe not the best choice. I know Now brand is cheaper on some items, but not all their items are the best option for THM.

Thanks for commenting! I posted a question (on THM FB site) about Now Xylitol back when I first started THM and people were saying that it’s not made from corn, it’s just grown on corn. The Now brand is THM approved, however some people have tummy problems with this kind. If there is new and recent information about this kind that I’m not aware of, I’d be happy to hear more!

My goal is to refrain from spiking blood sugar, so even if this isn’t a good brand for “purists”, as long as it doesn’t spike, I’m good with it!

I find that Trader Joe’s has phenomenal prices on just about everything!!! Plus you don’t have to pay shipping!

Hi Joy! I wish soooooooo much that we had a Trader Joe’s in Birmingham, AL! So sad we don’t. But yes! I totally agree that if you have one nearby, compare the pricing on my blog to Trader Joe’s so you can be sure to get the best price!!

Wow – you’re in Birmingham too! I’m just starting and very overwhelmed – especially with all these special ingredients. As a single mom with a tight budget, I don’t know how I’m going to afford all of these upfront. And honestly – I want to know what works/tastes good and what doesn’t before I invest the $$. And – my biggest challenge will be an allergy my daughter has — coconut! So, no coconut oil, coconut flour, etc. So many of the recipes we want to try have one or more of those in them. So what do I sub when, and how much…. Did I mention I was overwhelmed? Susan Sommers and LA Weight Loss didn’t have this much have a mind-boggle effect on me!
Would love to hear your advice…..

Hi Allison, I completely understand being overwhelmed. I too was overwhelmed when I first started, but I was determined to understand the THM concept so I kept moving forward and taking it one day at a time. The first thing I did was to make copies of the food list for S and E. For S foods the list is in chapter 7 and for E foods chapter 8. I stuck the lists on the fridge and checked them daily while meal planning to make sure I wasn’t doing any crossovers. Check out my tab What is THM as well as the drop down menus for a breakdown of the different categories of THM. My recipes on this site are pretty simple because I am by no means a gourmet cook. 🙂 And I definitely love a good yummy dish too so I didn’t want to compromise with taste. Thankfully with THM you don’t have to compromise because there are so many great choices that are not yucky diet food! Also with THM, you should never go hungry. And don’t worry, if you end up eating something that’s not THM or a crossover, you can just start again in 2 1/2 – 3 hours! It’s not a biggie. One more idea, check out my PDF with all of my favorite THM foods/ingredients and where I purchase them. I’m a huge couponer and deal shopper. Some of the prices have changed in the Excel doc but most are still the same. You can also download the Excel doc and customize to your grocery needs! Wish you all the best!
